Listen, Don’t Read: Visit Manifesta 11 with Philipp Spillmann

I love talking to people, especially about art. There are many ways to view a work of art. As an art mediator at Manifesta 11, I am free to avail of the entire range of possible interpretations and questions. I don’t believe that a work of art speaks solely for itself. But why should you book a tour? Manifesta 11 is a multi-facetted undertaking. I am your co-pilot and my job is to give you the information you need in the right doses and the right language. So that you don’t have to read everything yourself. But don’t worry, I can also keep my mouth shut and listen to what other people have to say. There is no right or wrong in art. It is the experience that counts – and what you make of it. How do I feel about this, what is the artwork trying to say to me? What can I take away from this? I am also interested in the relationships between different artworks. Manifesta 11 features some quite special combinations of works exhibited side by side. What are the butterflies doing beside the sculpture made of effluent sludge? There is something going on between the works. And a film going on in our heads.
